Women’s Longboard Camp

Bildschirmfoto 2012-03-04 um 21.32.48

amazing news for all ladies who are interested in longboarding: sixxa is organizing a camp in slovenia this summer. check out the press release and website for more info!

SIXXA presents the first women’s longboard camp, to take place on a stunning Slovenian mountain road near the village of Osilnica in August 2012.

- One week of downhill, slide, slalom and freeride skateboarding
- Organised by women for women
- Networking, meeting and fun within a international environment

SIXXA, the Austrian streetwear brand for women and crew presents a week of skateboarding in a relaxed, all-female environment. The camp is organised with the intention to pass on longboarding skills to beginners and advanced female riders. Participants will be able to improve their skills, whether beginner’s basics such as foot raking or more advanced manoeuvres such as sliding, cornering, pack riding and drafting. The sessions will be tailored in regard to the participants’ level of ability.

All instructors have been active within boardsports for several years, including competitive riding and are some of the best coaches available. Legendary downhill and slalom World Cup champion Bettina Luginbühl from Switzerland is just one example of the women that have now teamed up to pass on their skills during the one-week camp.

The camp will be held in the beautiful settings of the dreamy Slovenian village of Osilnica, surrounded by great roads to skate. The road for the camp is closed to traffic during the week and the groups are kept to a maximum of seven riders per instructor allowing for an excellent training ground. A trip to the local spa and daily yoga sessions are also part of the package.

Participants must be over the age of 18 and all level of abilities and disciplines are welcome. Own equipment is not a must. The sponsors generously supply a high quality set up to take home including a Fibertec deck, mounted on Sabre trucks and rounded of with Orangatang wheels.

When: August 05-10, 2012
Where: Osilnica, Slovenia

she also organizes events for women from time to time, for example the sixxa miniramp sessions.

to find out more about Kathi and sixxa, i interviewed her for you.

how was the idea to start a shop born?

The shop just happened by chance. Workmates were looking for someone how would rent their shop during the time they worked abroad and so we took the opportunity and started with 20 m2 and called it “sixxa dinghy store”. After one year they came back and as we’ve been fallen totally in love with our own shop we searched for a new one in the same area. Lucky us we found a bigger one in the same street, but better location. We really like the Kirchengasse because of the nice community there!

what kind of education do you have?
I studied Psychology, but broke up before the final exams, because I went to graphic design college, which I finished in 2002.

when did you open up your shop / when did you start your brand?
We opend the “sixxa dinghy store” in 2008 and the “sixxa store vienna” in 2009. I founded my clothing label sixxa in 2007 officially, but was already doing it as a side project with handmade stuff since 2004.

what advice can you give others who might want to start their own brand / open their own shop?
Better not to start it alone. It’s hell a lot of work and best would be to have distribution, design and marketing done by different people.

which sports do you participate in yourself?
Snowboarding since more than 20 years now, and a bit of running, skateboarding, basketball and surfing

any final words / shout outs?
As Patrick would say: I take it easy when I’m dead…

Ladies Longboard Workshop Vienna Recap

on tuesday, the 13th of september, a group of women gathered at 5pm at the donauinsel in vienna for the ladies longboard workshop organized by fee bücheler from huegelherzblut.
fee and her partner in crime, sophie friedel, were supported by sixxa, les ettes and smile at your sister.

after saying hello to everyone, we started a short but efficient warm up routine.
then, everyone geared up, refilled water bottles and got ready to go.
we crossed the bridge and rolled along the danube for some time, so fee and sophie got a chance to check out our riding – how secure we were, if everyone was able to push and to footbrake and so on.

afterwards, we split into 2 groups – one group worked on the more basic assets needed for longboarding like a proper pushing technique and secure footbraking. the other group went a bit uphill to practise turning as a means of speed control and the first steps towards sliding.
we got good advice from our coaches and i think everyone learned something that evening :)

time flew by and it was getting dark already, when we stopped our sessions and got together for the final words and good byes.
fee had a nice surprise for all the ladies – she brought goodie bags by les ettes, which included stuff like a sweet sixxa surprise, perfume by les ettes and an autographed poster of lisa filzmoser.

a big thanks to fee and sophie for taking their time to teach us and ride together, it was a blast!
thanks to les ettes, sixxa and smile at your sister for the support!
